Room 306, Friday afternoon

Raven didn't have much by way of clothes, but after two years living in one room, she did have plenty of other stuff that needed packing up. Unlike some other folks who were packing and cleaning out their dorm rooms this week, though, Raven was only going two floors up.

She and Kathy were very soon to be actual for real roommates! She was going to have a roommate who was unlikely to just up and leave quietly in the night in the middle of the semester!

So this packing session was anything but gloomy. She was bopping around the room, playing a new song she'd heard on the radio full blast, and occasionally pausing to rock out or punch her fist in the air.

"I love me! Gonna love myself,
no I don't need anybody else!

no I don't need anybody else!
Any time day or night!"

She'd apologize if someone came by complaining about the noise. Then probably try to make them dance with her, too.

There indeed came a pounding on her door at one point in the afternoon. "Hey!" Kathy said, trying to make her voice sound gruff. She mostly managed to make it sound like herself with a head cold. "What's all this noise about?"

Raven totally saw through your gruff vocal disguise, Kathy. She leaned around the edge of the door and gave Kathy a sly grin.

"Well, earlier I would have said self-confidence, but the more I listen the more sure I am that she's singing about a night in with her own hands."

"Yeah, that's--wait, what?" Kathy asked, clapping her hands over reddening cheeks. "I don't--what?"

Congrats, Raven. With a single sentence, you'd managed to catch your roommate completely flat-footed.

Raven held up her finger, eyes turned towards the ceiling as she waited for the second verse to start.

"I take it nice and slow,
Feeling good on my own,
Without you, yeah.
Got me speaking in tongues,
The beauty fully comes,
Without you. Yeah."

Your roommate was going to basically live for seeing you blush, Kathy. Congrats!

Why was that everybody's favorite hobby?!

"Ohmigosh!" Kathy said, hands moving from her cheeks to cover her mouth. "Is this song really about--"

She listened to the next lyrics, I'm gonna put my body first / And love me so hard 'til it hurts, and wow. Yeah. Okay, that was definitely suggestive at the very least.

"Wow," she said with a small cough. "Yeah. Okay then. I guess--yeah." She was grinning, even through the blush. "That's--definitely a song. About. Wow."

Very coherent, Kathy.

"Yup!" Raven said gleefully, bouncing on her toes again. "'I know how to scream my own name, scream my naaaaame. . . .' The future is awesome."

Kathy had finally managed to pull her hands away from her face, though her cheeks were still pretty red as she ducked by Raven and into the room. "So, I was gonna come by and offer to help you move stuff, but I'm liking the dance party thing you've got going on instead."

Even if she was practically clutching her pearls over the lyrics.

"Dance first, then move," Raven said, pumping her fist in the air again. "We have to have our priorities straight, after all."

"We're still going to be packing you up tomorrow when the newbies arrive to claim your room," Kathy declared, swaying her hips to the beat. "On the other hand, that means instant porters up to the fifth floor, right?"

"Please," Raven said. "We've got all night to get this done!" And having a dance party first definitely wouldn't result in them eventually lying sacked out on the floor surrounded by half-full bags and pondering ordering pizza.

. . . Actually, that sounded like a plan, too.

That was pretty much exactly what would happen, yes. Though Kathy would endeavor to get the bags to being at least three-quarters of the way full. Because she was responsible!

"If we stay up all night, we'll sleep through the picnic!" she pointed out. Not that she'd stopped dancing to pack yet. "We can't miss out on the first picnic of our senior year!"

"Ugh, why do you always have to be so reasonable?" Raven sighed. "Okay, short dance party first."

Kathy pouted at Raven. "You still love me, even at my most reasonable, right?" she asked.

"Of course!" Raven assured her. "How could I not? I'll just do my best to be a terrible influence on you and break you of the habit sometimes."

"Good," Kathy said, all bright smiles again. "Well I do such heinous things as make you take extra classes with the computer."

She reached for Raven's speakers and turned them up a little louder. "I think we can be responsible and enjoy a medium-length dance party."

"Woo!" Raven reached over to take Kathy's hand and spin her around. "And I'll get my revenge for that. By making you help me study."

"Which I absolutely never volunteered to do!" Kathy agreed amidst giggles as she spun, skirt belling out at mid-thigh. "Ugh, living together is going to be horrible! You're going to make me laugh and have fun, like, all the time!"

"All the time. I'll be insufferable."

"Worst," Kathy said with a sigh, taking the opportunity to spin Raven now. "I guess I should just resign myself to flunking all my classes, being held back a year, and never going to college now."

Actually, she had several friends who had all suggested variations on that very idea, so at least some people would be happy about that outcome! At least until her parents came to murder her in the night.

And then they'd be happy with the outcome and the way they'd get to beat up Kathy's parents while protecting her from them!

"Because that's definitely an either/or," Raven laughed, shifting into a skirt just so it could twirl out when she spun. "Fun or a high school diploma."

They could make a sign-up sheet, but Eliot would just cut to the front anyway.

"There's no possibility of a middle ground," Kathy agreed. "In fact, just being friends with you has put my GPA in serious jeopardy! I might not graduate with a 5.0 GPA!"

Out of a 4 point scale, yes. Overachiever, thy name was Katherine Hana Li.

". . . If four is straight As, then what is five?"

"Straight As with Honors and AP classes," Kathy explained. "They're weighted more heavily than regular classes. So an A in an AP course is worth more than an A in a regular course."

And Kathy took a lot of AP courses.

"And those are probably all you take, aren't they."

[spin_kick_snap]

"I'll have you know I'm taking two non-AP courses," Kathy informed Raven. "So there. Linear Algebra and Italian I."

Granted, it was because Linear Algebra was a college course and if Kathy knew enough Italian she would have taken the AP course...but the important part was that they weren't AP courses, technicalities or not!
